Public Relations: An Asset to Your Business
What is it?
Public relations is a term for cultivation or development of the message, image, feeling, wording and branding of your organization. It is different than marketing and different than advertising yet works in conjunction with those areas to create a single message imprint for your organization or even for various factions that exist within it. A Web Nook can communicate with the media in order to garner press (unearned media) for a particular product, department or individual within your organization. An article in a newspaper, a segment on a news program or a mention on a radio talk show can add a tremendous validation in the eye of the public. We can coordinate the outgoing message(s) from advertising and marketing efforts as well as wording and look of a Web site. When all of these messages are cohesive, the overall picture of a company consolidates into an image or brand more readily understood by the general public as well as within the organization itself.
Exactly what is it?
PR consists of the following:
- Development of press releases
- Relationships with the media
- Media training
- Communications plan in the event of an emergency
- Conducting press events
- Coordinate with advertising to create a cohesive message
- Web site development and purpose
- Product release and upgrade
- In-house image-building and material development
- Special event coordination
Press Releases
Press releases are sent to members of the media to announce a new employee, a new product, a buyout or new business strategy, etc. A Web Nook can develop the press release format and style. For longer, more detailed press releases, we can do the research, put together the information and target specific media outlets (radio, tv and print). For short press releases such as a new employee the department can handle the press release once the format and media sources have been formatted.
The Media
The media list is an important tool in the development of public relations for an organization. There are thousands of media personnel just in Georgia alone. At A Web Nook we have a personal knowledge of media outlets, their deadlines, format requirements, preferences, actual contacts within the company as well as regional differences in media.
Media Training and Emergency Communications Plans, Press Events
There is always the possibility that a company could become a media target in the case of an emergency (fire, accident at a worksite, an executive in the news, etc.). In the case of such an emergency, a solid communications plan must be followed in order that everyone within the company knows who to look to for guidance. Who will speak to the media? What will be said? Who will send out the information with regards to the incident? If no plan exists, the minute an emergency happens, the company image could be at risk. A press conference may be necessary for some events or emergencies and a PR consultant has the expertise and understanding of how this must be done in order to be most effective.
Web sites, Product Release and Upgrade
A Web Nook can assist in how a Web site is presented. We can also gather information to be used for the written areas of the site. The written description of executives backgrounds is as important as departmental and product descriptions.
In-house image-building and materials development
In most organizations, the logo is the beginning of the brand. From the company logo, all image related materials filter out into the public for consumption. This “look and feel” can affect the perception of the organization. A cohesive message can affect in a positive way. However, an unorganized and scattered message can have a major affect. A Web Nook can assist in managing the development of the company logo and all materials containing that logo as well as how it is used within the company.
Special event coordination
Some companies have special events so frequently that they have a department which handles all planning and of special events. In some cases, this responsibility falls on the PR consultant or at least a portion of the marketing and promotion for special events. Again, A Web Nook can manage production of materials relating to the company.
